M31 Partners with Building Love Association to Witness Atayal Academy Clinch the Grand Prize at the Tokyo International Choir Competition

“When children can go further, the world can hear more of Taiwan’s voices.”

The year 2026 marks a remarkably profound and meaningful chapter for M31’s ESG initiatives.

Through our partnership with the Building Love Association, M31 has proudly supported the Atayal Academy for the third consecutive year. We believe that the true value of corporate giving lies not in one-time donations, but in sustained commitment and long-term support—so that children have the opportunity to pursue their dreams, and the power of education and culture can continue to take root and flourish.

This summer, that commitment bore remarkable fruit.

The Taiwanese delegation—formed by the Atayal Academy Youth Choir and the Voice of Atayal Choir—traveled to Japan to compete in the 8th Tokyo International Choir Competition. Competing against 45 outstanding choirs from 12 countries, with more than 1,200 participants, they rose above fierce international competition to win the Grand Prix—bringing the voices of Taiwan’s Indigenous communities to the world stage.

Even more exciting, the Atayal Academy Youth Choir didn’t take home just one award—it captured six major honors in one sweep:

  • Grand Prix Champion
  • Gold Prize (1st Place), Youth Choir Category
  • Gold Prize (1st Place), Contemporary Music Category
  • Best Interpretation of Renaissance Music
  • Best Interpretation of the Compulsory Piece (Contemporary Music Category)
  • Best Conductor Award for Wei-Yuan Hsu

With six major honors in total, the choir became one of the most celebrated ensembles of this year’s competition.

During the competition, the Youth Choir performed a diverse repertoire in multiple languages, including Latin, English, Japanese, and Atayal. For the required piece, 大王のお猿さん (Daio no Osaru-san, “The Great King’s Monkey”), the singers focused intensively on Japanese pronunciation and seamlessly integrated creative choreography and expressive movement—delivering a vibrant, tightly synchronized performance that captivated the Japanese audience and drew enthusiastic applause.

Yet, what touched us most was seeing them bring their culture onto the international stage.

In the Contemporary Music category, the Youth Choir performed “Yasa Tnaq,” a work written in Atayal by emerging Atayal composer Syat Pawang (Chien Chiao). Blending Atayal cultural elements with contemporary pop and jazz idioms, the piece highlights the possibilities of Indigenous cultural innovation. Through music, they were not only competing—they were telling the Atayal story to the world.

This honor was no accident.

For years, the Atayal Academy has nurtured children’s confidence and capabilities through choral education. Many choir members began learning music as early as elementary school and, over the years, continued training outside of their regular studies—steadily building their skills. Founded in 2023, the Youth Choir is made up of these students who have grown up at the Academy, extending the Academy’s educational impact and bringing new strength to cultural heritage and transmission.

For M31, this is more than just an award announcement.

It represents the real, measurable impact of three years of educational support delivered through the Building Love Association; it means that children from rural and remote communities have the opportunity to compete on the world stage; and, above all, it affirms that when different sectors of society come together to invest, education can truly change the course of a child’s life.

We believe that corporate sustainability is not only about environmental protection and governance, but also about a long-term commitment to society. Looking ahead, M31 will continue to partner with the Building Love Association to support the Atayal Academy—accompanying more children as they pursue their dreams with courage, helping Taiwan’s voices be heard around the world, and enabling more people to see the boundless possibilities that education can create.
